Purpose

You are a beloved child of God. You have eternal worth! Understanding these truths will help you find purpose in life and courage to face challenges.

Description

As a group, make a list of things you can do each day to strengthen your relationship with Heavenly Father and help you understand your eternal worth. You could ask the following questions to get started:

  • What can I do to strengthen my relationship with Heavenly Father? (Pray, read my scriptures, attend church, attend the temple, sing hymns, and so on.)

  • What can I do that shows I am a child of Heavenly Father? (Create a gift, paint or draw a picture, cook a meal, plant a garden, and so on.)

  • What can I do to connect to my family? (Plan a family reunion, write letters to grandparents, serve someone, and so on.)

Write each of these things on slips of paper. Then find or create a container and label it “My Eternal Worth.” Take the container home and put it where you can see it each day. Keep the slips of paper in a small bowl nearby, and try to do one each day. As you do each small thing, put it in your container and remember your eternal worth as a child of God.

More Ideas

  • Create artwork of your worth—Provide group members with drawing or painting materials. Invite them to draw or paint a picture that shows their divine worth. Give participants an opportunity to share their pictures and talk about them.

  • The true source—Choose a group game to play. Give several leaders colored stickers (enough for all participants to receive at least 5 to 10). During the game, the leaders walk around and put all the stickers randomly on participants without explaining why. After the game, tell participants the winners and losers will be determined by the type of stickers they received. Ask participants how they feel about this and why. Explain that the world often judges our worth based on things that don’t really matter (appearance, status, and so forth). However, our true worth comes from being a beloved child of God, something that doesn’t change.

  • Spotlight night—Before the activity, assign each group member to prepare a short spotlight about another group member. Include things like talents, favorite hobbies, accomplishments, and so forth. At the activity, have participants share the spotlights they prepared.

  • Hike and testimony meeting—Go on a walk or hike with your group. Discuss the love Heavenly Father has for each of His children, and invite each participant to share his or her testimony at the end of your hike. Consider holding this activity at night under the stars.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to understand your eternal worth?

  • When have you benefited from recognizing and appreciating your eternal worth?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have remembering that you are a child of God?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
