Purpose

Cleaning a Church building is a great way to serve others and show respect for sacred places. It’s also an opportunity to have fun together and strengthen relationships with family or friends.

Description

As a group, work together with parents or leaders to clean your local meetinghouse or other Church building (interior, grounds, or both).

More Ideas

  • Follow up with a treat—After you’ve finished cleaning, have a treat together. You could assign someone to bring a treat, or you could go somewhere together to get a treat.

  • Team challenge—Divide into two teams. Give each team half the cleaning tasks. The team that finishes first wins; however, each team must approve the work of the other team (to avoid the temptation to rush too fast and not clean adequately).

  • Make cleaning cards—If your building doesn’t already have instructions for cleaning tasks, print the cards found on LDS.org (you can choose small or large cards). Cut the cards and laminate them, and then leave them in the custodial closet for others to use.

  • Treasure hunt—Come ahead of time and hide little treats or messages around the building for participants to find while cleaning. You could also hide puzzle pieces that participants can put together when cleaning is finished. The completed puzzle could let the group know about some kind of treat or reward. (Be sure to keep track of where you hide things in case some items aren’t found.) Tell participants to watch for items as they clean.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why is it important to give our time and effort to help clean Church buildings?

  • What experiences have you had in the past with cleaning Church buildings?

  • What thoughts or impressions do you have about helping to clean Church buildings?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
