Purpose

You might be able to find someone to unclog your toilet or change the oil in your car, but knowing you can do things yourself is empowering! You’ll also save money and may be able to help someone else with your skills.

Goal Description

Learn the fundamentals of home and vehicle upkeep.

Goal Ideas

  • Take a class at school, in the community, or online where you can learn basic skills like auto maintenance, woodworking, or home repairs. Local businesses might also offer helpful classes.

  • Learn to identify common tools and what each tool is used for. If possible, begin to assemble a basic tool kit of your own. You could include things like a hammer, a set of screwdrivers, a measuring tape, and some pliers.

  • Find an expert to learn from. You could watch an auto mechanic, technician, home repair professional, or anyone else who has maintenance skills you’d like to learn. If possible, ask if you can work on a project together.

  • Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, United Way, or a similar group to see how walls and sheetrock are built and assembled or how damaged homes are repaired.

  • Create your own goal.
