Purpose

Maybe you want to quilt or make your own clothes. Maybe your favorite shirt has a rip that needs mending. Maybe you just don’t want to feel helpless next time you lose a button. In any case, basic sewing and mending skills will come in handy!

Goal Description

Learn basic sewing and mending skills.

Goal Ideas

  • Learn how to sew on a button.

  • Put together a small emergency sewing kit. You could include safety pins, needles, thread, and a few buttons.

  • Learn how to hand sew. Ask someone to teach you how to thread a needle, knot the thread, and undo mistakes. Once you’ve got that down, learn different kinds of stitches and how to use them to do things like shortening pants or mending a ripped shirt.

  • Ask someone to teach you how to use a sewing machine. Learn how to thread the machine, replace the bobbin, and other basics. Move on from there to learn about different fabrics and what kind of stitches you can use. Practice on pieces of scrap material.

  • Find and follow a simple sewing pattern for an easy project. Drawstring bags, pillow cases, and pajama pants are great beginner projects.

  • Create your own goal.
