Purpose

Plan and hold a dance. Dancing is a fun way to build confidence and develop appropriate relationships between young men and young women.

Description

Within your stake or district or with other stakes or districts in your area, plan and hold a dance for youth ages 14 and older. Create a positive environment for socializing by following the guidelines for “Dances and Music” in Handbook 2, 13.6.6. You will need to find a place to host the dance, choose popular and clean music, and get the word out with fliers or social media. You could also provide refreshments and put up decorations to make your dance even more fun!

As you plan this activity, please follow the counsel given in chapter 13 of Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010) and review “Safety Recommendations for Church Activities.”

More Ideas

  • Learn a new dance—Invite someone to teach a traditional, cultural, or historical dance to you and your friends. Or you could learn from appropriate videos (for example, see the line dance videos on the FSY Conferences page). Then practice your new moves on the dance floor!

  • Dance cards—Fill out a dance card with the name of each new dance partner you meet. At the end of the dance, you could invite participants to enter full dance cards into a drawing for a fun prize.

  • Plan it around a theme—Plan a dance around a theme. This might make it more interesting and give you a direction as you plan decorations, refreshments, and advertising. You could even invite people to wear themed outfits.

  • Team up with another faith or group—Host a big dance together. Share your values of modesty and clean music during planning. Create lasting relationships with others you may not have met otherwise.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why is it important to have wholesome social activities like dances?

  • When have wholesome social activities helped you develop good relationships?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have about creating a positive, modest atmosphere for dances?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
