Purpose

Strengthen your understanding of and relationship with the Savior as you improve scripture study skills.

Description

Invite a parent, adviser, youth, or teacher to show your group how to improve scripture study through marking scriptures, taking notes, using the Topical Guide and other resources, writing thoughts in a journal, and so on. Have participants try each method. Group members could use their own scriptures, the Gospel Library app, or a photocopied page of scripture.

More Ideas

  • Draw a story—Pass out paper and coloring tools. Tell a story from the scriptures while the group draws a picture of the story. After the story, talk about the lessons they learned.

  • Digital scripture study—Invite an individual from your ward or stake to share how they use the Gospel Library app to study the scriptures. Explore ways to mark scripture passages, record thoughts, and so on.

  • Memorize a verse—Choose a verse to commit to memory. As a group, memorize a phrase or sentence at a time until you have memorized the entire verse.

  • Find your answer—Ask the group to share questions they have about life or the gospel. Talk about how you could find answers to those questions. Together, choose a question to answer using the scriptures.

  • Scripture chase—Have everyone close their scriptures, and then give a clue or quote a specific scripture. When the first person to find the scripture calls out, make sure it is the correct one. You might keep track of points for individuals, play in teams, or all accumulate points together.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to learn scripture study skills?

  • When have you felt the Spirit while studying the scriptures?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have about learning scripture study skills?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
