Purpose

The gospel is like an iceberg. If you stay on the surface, you only see part of it. But there’s a lot more to discover! Studying gospel topics in depth will help you strengthen your testimony and become a more confident and faithful disciple of the Lord.

Goal Description

Study gospel topics in depth.

Goal Ideas

  • Pick a topic you’d like to learn more about—the Atonement, meekness, or charity, for example. Find and study as many scriptures as you can on that topic: you can use the search function in the online scriptures or the Gospel Library app, or you can use the Topical Guide online or in your printed scriptures.

  • Take on President Russell M. Nelson’s challenge in “Study the Savior’s Words” (New Era or Liahona, Jan. 2018, 57–59). What do you learn about the Savior as you study? Write down impressions that come to you.

  • Study talks from the most recent general conference, and look for ideas that are repeated in multiple talks. Consider especially how you can live the teachings you study.

  • Read Elder David A. Bednar’s talk “A Reservoir of Living Water” (Brigham Young University devotional, Feb. 4, 2007, speeches.byu.edu). Choose and apply one of his suggestions for studying the scriptures in depth. Then choose and apply another of his suggestions. What new things do you learn using each suggestion?

  • If possible, take seminary, or use seminary and institute or other manuals to help you study gospel topics.

  • Create your own goal.
