‘Oku fefaka‘apa‘apa‘aki ‘a e husepānití mo e uaifí ‘i he‘ena fakahaa‘i ‘a e ‘ofá, anga‘ofá, mo e loto ‘ofá.

Na‘e pehē ‘e Siosefa Sāmita ‘i ha fakataha ‘a e kau fafine ‘o e Fine‘ofá: “ ‘Oku ‘ikai fie ma‘u ke mou fakamatalili‘i homou ngaahi husepānití koe‘uhí ko ha‘anau ngaahi tō‘onga, kae tuku ke ongo‘i e lahi ‘o ho‘o ta‘e halaiá, anga‘ofá mo ho‘o loto ‘ofá, he ‘oku mālohi ange ia ‘i ha maka momosi ‘oku tautau ‘i he kiá; ‘o ‘ikai ko e taú, ‘oku ‘ikai ko e fekainakí [keé], ‘oku ‘ikai ko e faikehekehé, pe felāuakí, ka ko e angamaluú, ‘ofá, haohaoá—ko e ngaahi me‘a ‘eni ‘oku totonu ke ne hiki hake koe ‘i he fakakaukau ‘o e kau tangata lelei kotoa pē. …

“… Ko e taimi ‘oku mafasia ai ha tangata ‘i he faingata‘á, ‘i he taimi ‘oku puputu‘u ai ‘i he loto hoha‘á mo e faingata‘a‘iá, kapau ‘e fakafetaulaki ‘aki ia ha malimali kae ‘ikai ko ha kē mo ha lāunga—kapau ‘e lava ke fakafetaulaki ‘aki ia ha anga mokomoko, ‘e lava ke fakanonga hono laumālié mo fakafiemālie‘i hono lotó; ko e taimi ‘oku mole ai ‘a e ‘amanakí ‘i he fakakaukaú, ‘okú ne fie ma‘u ha fakafiemālie ‘o e ‘ofá mo e anga‘ofá. … ‘I ho‘omou foki ki ‘apí, ‘oua na‘a mou teitei fai ha lea ‘ita pe ta‘e ‘ofa ki homou husepānití, kae tuku ke fakakalauni ‘e he anga‘ofá mo e ‘ofa faka-Kalaisí ho‘omou ngāué ‘o fai atu mei heni.”5

Na‘e lipooti ‘e ‘Ilaisa R. Sinou ‘o pehē: “Na‘e na‘ina‘i ‘a e [Palōfita ko Siosefa Sāmitá] ki he hou‘eiki fafiné ke nau tokanga ma‘u pē ki he‘enau tuí mo nau lotua, pea ma‘u ha loto falala ‘i honau husepānití, ‘a ia kuo fokotu‘u ‘e he ‘Otuá ke nau faka‘apa‘apa‘í.”6

‘Oku faka‘apa‘apa‘i ‘e he fānaú ‘enau mātu‘á ‘aki ‘enau fakahaa‘i ‘enau hounga‘iá kiate kinautolu pea mo fakamahu‘inga‘i kinautolu ‘i he‘enau mo‘uí kotoa.

Na‘e ‘a‘ahi faka‘aho ‘a e Palōfitá ‘i ha ngaahi ‘aho ‘i ‘Okatopa 1835, ki he‘ene tangata‘eiki ne puke lahí, ‘o tokanga‘i ia “ ‘i he loto tokanga lahi.” ‘Oku hā ‘i he tohinoa ‘a e Palōfitá ‘o pehē: “Na‘á ku toe tokanga‘i ‘eku tangata‘eikí he na‘e fu‘u puke lahi. ‘I he‘eku lotu lilo he pongipongí, na‘e folofola mai ai ‘a e ‘Eikí, ‘‘A ‘eku tamaio‘eiki, ‘e toe mo‘ui ho‘o tangata‘eikí.‘ Na‘á ku tokanga‘i ia ‘i he ahó ni kakato mo hiki hake hoku lotó ki he ‘Otuá ‘i he huafa ‘o Sīsū Kalaisí, ke Ne toe fakamo‘ui ia, koe‘uhí ke tāpuekina au ‘e he‘ene feohí mo ‘ene akonakí, he ‘oku ou lau ia ko e taha ‘o e ngaahi tāpuaki ma‘ongo‘onga taha ‘i māmani ke tāpuekina ‘aki e feohi ‘a e ongo mātu‘á, he ‘oku hanga ‘e he‘ena matu‘otu‘á mo ‘ena taukeí ‘o ‘ai ke na lava ‘o fakahoko ‘a e akonaki lelei tahá. ‘I he efiafí, ne ‘alu ange ‘a Misa Tēvita Uitemā. “ ‘Oku ou manatu‘i ha ngaahi ‘ata ‘o ‘eku kei si‘í. Kuó u fakakaukau ki he‘eku tangata‘eikí ‘a ia kuo si‘i mālōloó. … Ko ha taha sino faka‘ei‘eiki mo ne ma‘u ha fakakaukau mā‘olunga, mā‘oni‘oni, hākeaki‘i, pea mo angatonu. “ ‘Oku toputapu kiate au ‘a e ngaahi fakakaukau kuó u mata‘ikoloa‘aki ‘i he hisitōlia ‘o ‘ene mo‘uí, pea kuó u fa‘a fakakaukau ki ai, pea kuo tohitongi ia ai ‘e he‘eku vakaí, talu mei hoku fā‘ele‘í. ‘Oku toputapu kiate au hono efuefú, pea mo e potu ‘oku fakatokoto aí. ‘Oku toputapu kiate au ‘a e fonualoto na‘á ku fa‘u ke ne fakamalumalu hono ‘ulú. Tuku mu‘a ke hoko atu ‘o ta‘engata ‘a e manatu ki he‘eku tangata‘eikí. … ‘Ofa ke ‘afio mai ‘a e ‘Otua ‘oku ou ‘ofa aí mei ‘olunga mo fakahaofi au mei hoku ngaahi fili ‘i hení, peá ne puke hoku nimá koe‘uhí ke lava ‘o tu‘u ‘i he Mo‘unga ko Saioné, pea mo fakakalauni ta‘engata ai au ‘e he‘eku tangata‘eikí.

“ ‘‘Oku ‘ikai fe‘unga ‘a e ngaahi leá ia mo ha lea fakafonua ke ne fakamatala‘i ‘a e lotohounga‘ia ‘oku ou mo‘ua ai ki he ‘Otuá ‘i he‘ene foaki mai kiate au ha mātu‘a faka‘ei‘eikí.

“Ko ‘eku fine‘eikí foki ko e taha ia ‘o e kau fafine faka‘ei‘eiki mo lelei taha ‘i he kakai fefine kotoa pē. Fakatauange ke fakatolonga ‘e he ‘Otuá hono ngaahi ‘ahó pea mo hoku ngaahi ‘ahó, koe‘uhí ke ma mo‘ui ‘o feohi fuoloa.”9

“ ‘I he‘etau fakakaukau ki he tokanga, pea mo e faivelenga ta‘e tūkua ‘a ‘etau mātu‘a ‘i hono tokanga‘i kitautolú, kae ‘uma‘a hono lahi ‘o e ngaahi houa ‘o ‘enau mamahi mo loto hoha‘a kiate kitautolu ‘i hotau fanga ki‘i mohenga pēpeé mo hotau ve‘e mohengá, ‘i he taimi ‘o ‘etau puké, hono ‘ikai totonu ke tau tokanga ki honau lotó ‘i he‘enau toulekeleká! Na‘e tohi ai ‘e he Palōfitá fekau‘aki mo ha toko ua ‘o hono ngaahi tokouá, ne na fakatou mate kei iiki: “ ‘Alavini, ko hoku tokoua lahi tahá—‘oku ou manatu‘i lelei ‘a e o‘o ‘a e mamahi ne ‘i hoku loto kei si‘í ‘o ne meimei uesia hoku mafu vaivaí ‘i he‘ene maté. Ko e lahi taha mo e anga faka‘ei‘eiki taha ia ‘i he fāmili ‘o ‘eku tamaí. Ko e taha ia ‘o e ngaahi foha anga faka‘ei‘eiki taha ‘i he ngaahi foha ‘o e tangatá. … Na‘e ‘ikai ke ‘iate ia ha anga kākā. Na‘e mo‘ui ta‘e ‘i ai hano mele talu mei he‘ene kei si‘í. … Ko e taha ia ‘o e kau fakakaukau lelei taha ‘i he fa‘ahinga ‘o e tangatá, pea ‘i he‘ene maté na‘e ‘a‘ahi mai kiate ia ‘a e kau ‘āngelo ‘a e ‘Eikí ‘i he ngaahi momeniti faka‘osi ‘o ‘ene mo‘uí. … .

“Ko hoku tokoua ko Toni Kālosi Sāmitá … ko ha tamasi‘i anga faka‘ei‘eiki foki mo ia; na‘e ‘ikai ke u teitei ‘ilo ha mele ‘iate ia; na‘e te‘eki ai ke u mamata ‘i ha‘ane anga‘uli ‘e taha, pe ‘i ha‘ane anga ta‘e fakalotu pe fakakaukau ta‘e fe‘unga ‘i he‘ene kei si‘í talu mei hono fanau‘í ‘o a‘u ki he taimi ‘o ‘ene si‘i pekiá. Ko ha tamasi‘i matātangata, ‘ulungāanga lelei, anga‘ofa, angama‘a, angatonu mo faitotonu; pea ko e fē pē ‘e ‘alu ki ai hono laumālié, tuku mu‘a ke ‘alu ki ai mo ho‘okú foki.”11

Na‘e hiki ‘eni ‘e Siosefa Sāmita ‘i ha tohi ki hono ta‘okete ko Hailamé: “ ‘E Hoku Tokoua ‘Ofeina ko Hailame, ‘oku ou hoha‘a lahi atu kiate koe, ka ‘oku ou manatu‘i ma‘u pē koe ‘i he‘eku ngaahi lotú, ‘o kole ki he ‘Otuá ke Ne malu‘i koe neongo ‘a e kakaí pe tēvoló. … ‘Ofa ke malu‘i koe ‘e he ‘Otuá.”12
