Men and Women of Faith Lecture: “Alexander Schreiner: A Legacy of Music”
- August 14, 2014
- Assembly Hall on Temple Square, 50 North West Temple, Salt Lake City
- Dr. Daniel F. Berghout, composer, organist, and teacher, will be giving the lecture on Alexander Schreiner.
The Church History Library will host the Men and Women of Faith lecture “Alexander Schreiner: A Legacy of Music” on Thursday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The presenter will be Dr. Daniel F. Berghout. This event is free and open to the public.
Schreiner, one of the most celebrated organists of the 20th century, was first called at age eight to be the organist for his congregation in Germany. After moving to the United States, Schreiner toured 44 states, including California, performing as an organist at UCLA. He was then requested by Heber J. Grant in 1939 to return to Salt Lake City, where he was listed by the Musical American Radio polls among the top artists in the nation seven times. He also presided at the Mormon Tabernacle organ for more than 50 years.
With his contribution to nine songs in the LDS hymnbook, this is said of Schreiner in The History of Hymns:
“Alexander Schreiner was acknowledged as one of the mightiest organists of his day, mighty in power, amazing in technique, yet sensitive in rendition and interpretation.”
Schreiner’s profound influence over music in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reached far beyond the generations of organists he inspired.
Dr. Daniel F. Berghout, composer, organist, and teacher, is the founder and owner of wardorganist.com (a division of organmusicdownloads.com). A native of Ogden, Utah, he received a bachelor of arts degree from Weber State University as well as a master of music degree from Brigham Young University. Dr. Berghout received his doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance from the University of Kansas, where his landmark doctoral dissertation, Alexander Schreiner, was awarded honors. Dr. Berghout has performed regularly as a guest organist at the Mormon Tabernacle since 1992.
