The following January, he was ordained an elder and called to serve a mission (Doctrine and Covenants 75:34). After preaching in Pennsylvania, he moved to Kirtland, Ohio, in September 1832. The following year, he was remarried to Charlotte Woods. In 1837 he served on the Kirtland high council and was a member of the Kirtland Safety Society. He moved to Far West, Missouri, in 1838, and was killed in the Battle of Crooked River in Ray County, Missouri.
