Jared Carter

(1801–49)

Jared Carter was born in Killingworth, Connecticut. He married Lydia Ames in September 1823. Carter was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colesville, New York, in February 1831. Later that year, he was ordained a priest, following the direction of a revelation (Doctrine and Covenants 52:38), after which he was ordained an elder. Between 1831 and 1833, he served missions to the eastern United States and Michigan Territory, and by May 1833 he was ordained a high priest. In August 1833, he was appointed by revelation to serve on the building committee for the Kirtland, Ohio, temple (Doctrine and Covenants 94:13–15). In February 1834 he was appointed to the Kirtland high council (Doctrine and Covenants 102:3), and shortly thereafter he was called on a brief mission to Upper Canada. Back in Kirtland, he helped build the temple and held stock in the Kirtland Safety Society. In 1837 he moved to Far West, Missouri, where he was appointed to the high council in 1838. In 1839 he moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. After briefly affiliating with James J. Strang’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in New York City in 1846, Carter returned to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before passing away in DeKalb, Illinois, in 1849.
