Principle 1: Find Peace and Strength in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

We have a loving Heavenly Father who is aware of our circumstances. Remembering our true identity and relationship as sons and daughters of God helps us to feel and experience His concern and love. Christ suffered all things so that He could succor and uplift us. He understands what we are experiencing.

Turning with faith to Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father, particularly during the most difficult of situations, can bring comfort. As an innocent and sinless man, Christ suffered for each of us and can identify with our pain like no one else can. His love is extended to each of us. Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has promised:

“The Savior can mend broken hearts. Understanding our true identity as sons and daughters of God is central to everything about our eternal progression. We are sons and daughters of the Eternal Father. We have the capacity to grow and develop and ultimately become like Him.

“If we understand who we are, it equips us, it fortifies us, it prepares us to deal with every challenge, every obstacle that we encounter in our lives. It is the sure anchor and foundation upon which we can build” (“Find Peace and Strength in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ” [video]).

Remembering our divine identity as children of God helps us gain strength through the enabling power of the Savior and His Atonement. As we pray and offer our broken hearts to Him, He will mend and strengthen us. Prayer may be a struggle, but as we pour out our hearts to Him, He will mend and strengthen us. As we pray to our Heavenly Father in faith, we can find peace beyond our understanding.

Our struggles are known and recognized by Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. We are loved deeply. As we exercise faith in simple and sincere ways, we can feel of Their love and They will guide us to people and resources that can help us.

Apply This Principle

The following are some helps on additional topics to enhance your learning and application of this principle.

Will the pain and suffering ever end?

Our pain and suffering can be eased by turning to God as His children. A spouse’s pornography use may leave us feeling worthless, imperfect, and inadequate. However, it is possible for us to replace the confusion and despair that we often feel with hope as we remember our divine identity as children of God.

Where can I turn for support?

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ can provide comfort and support in a way that no one else can. We may feel as if there is nowhere to turn and as if nobody can understand us. As we turn to God and the Savior, we can find support, peace, and love.
