Shadrach Roundy was born in Rockingham, Vermont, in 1789. He married Betsy Quimby in 1814. In January 1832, Roundy was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio. The following May, he was ordained an elder. He later became a member of the Seventy. After brief sojourns in Far West, Missouri, and Warsaw, Illinois, Roundy moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840. The following year, a revelation called Roundy, Vinson Knight, and Samuel Smith to “preside over the bishopric” (Doctrine and Covenants 124:141). Roundy was also a member of Council of Fifty. He later served as a bishop in Winter Quarters, in what later became Nebraska. In 1847 he migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, in Utah Territory. From 1849 to 1856, he served as the bishop of the Salt Lake City Sixteenth Ward.
