Remembering Elder L. Tom Perry

Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles passed away on May 30, 2015, after spending his whole life being a good example to others. He was 92 years old.

Elder Perry was born on August 5, 1922, in Logan, Utah. His parents taught their six children to work hard and serve others. Young Tom helped by taking food to families in need and cleaning homes for people who needed help. He was also a good example to his friends. When they played ball, they didn’t need an umpire because Tom was such a good peacemaker.

Tom served a mission in the northern United States. Soon after that he joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II. One of his missionary companions also joined the marines. Together they taught other marines the gospel. Some even joined the Church!

After the war Tom became a successful businessman. He and his wife Virginia raised three children and moved around the United States as Tom worked for different companies.

Elder Perry was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve on April 6, 1974. A few months later, Sister Perry passed away. Elder Perry turned to the Lord for strength and comfort. Later he married Barbara Dayton.

Elder Perry believed in being a good example. He said, “As you are engaged in doing good, being honorable and upright men and women, the Light of Christ will be reflected by your lives.” Each of us can be a good example to others, just like Elder Perry has been a good example to us!
