BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir Brings Joy to New Zealand’s Northland
Choir kicks off New Zealand tour with warm reception in Kerikeri
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii Concert Choir kicked off its “Voyages of Light” tour in Kerikeri, New Zealand on Thursday May 30.
A near-capacity crowd of 400 at the city’s Turner Centre was treated to a wonderful evening of music.
A number of interfaith and community leaders including local mayor, John Carter, and the president of BYU-Hawaii, John S. Tanner, were in attendance.
The proceeds of the concert went to Be Free, a nonprofit organization that promotes abstinence from drugs and alcohol through the expression of music.
Local young people who are part of Be Free performed before the choir.
The choir then performed a variety of numbers including songs from the Pacific Islands.
The next day, Friday May 31, the choir sang at the Radius Bay Care Home and Hospital in Puketona.
They were warmly received when they greeted the residents after singing for them.
When asked about the choir’s performance at the care centre, President Tanner said, “We bring joy and love to them and what happens when you do that is you get more than you give.”
With a great start, the tour continued with wonderful success and the choir shared their talents and their spirit with the people of New Zealand.
