Latter-day Saint Lifestyle: Rules for Better Living

Why do we have so many rules? Well, we call them “commandments,” and you probably know 10 of them. But we have a few more that come from modern revelation—God speaking today through a living prophet. Some rules may seem strict, but God is just looking out for us. For example, Latter-day Saints avoid alcohol and drugs. Choice is a big part of God’s plan, so we try not to do anything that would inhibit our decision-making ability or lead to addiction.

So if you’ve ever thought there’s something different about Latter-day Saints, you’re probably right. And we’d love to tell you all about the rules that others might think are “weird” or “crazy” but are given by a loving Heavenly Father for the benefit of His children—for your happiness. In fact, with a little context, many people decide to try our lifestyle or even get baptized. Meet with missionaries to see if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is right for you.

“I remember the first time [I applied for a cycling team] ... submitting the paragraph about why I would never compete on Sundays. It’s a day that we respect and worship. We spend time as a family. This gift of having a Sabbath day is a day that I have to rest, to recover, to spiritually refill myself. … And there was never a problem. They accepted it. … I believe that God has given commandments, and I consider it a blessing.”

“We may feel at times that God’s laws restrict our personal freedom, take from us our agency, and limit our growth. But as we seek for greater understanding, as we allow our Father to teach us, we will begin to see that His laws are a manifestation of His love for us and obedience to His laws is an expression of our love for Him.”

“In college, I had a real hard time connecting with other people. The drinking scene is big. The party scene is big. And I had to kind of make my stand of what I believed and what I was going to do and what I was not going to do. And it was hard for my teammates to accept that at first. But eventually it turned into a form of respect, and that meant the world to me. … My faith is my foundation. It is my core of who I am.”

“I feel really great about the choice I’ve made to stay sexually pure [before marriage]. It makes me really confident, and I just feel like I’m in control of my life. I know God will always be there to help and strengthen us when we most need it.”
