3 Things the Book of Mormon Can Teach You about Prayer

Prayer is how we communicate with God. The Bible teaches us why—and even how—God wants us to pray to Him. You can also learn about prayer in the Book of Mormon, a book of scripture that is similar to the Bible, written by people who lived in the ancient Americas.

Why should you pray?

Page 303 of the Book of Mormon contains some great advice on prayer: “Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good” (Alma 37:37). Prayer is a perfect vehicle for seeking guidance and help from God as you make decisions—whether about daily life or long-term plans.

God is in the details, so pray about the details

A Book of Mormon prophet named Amulek taught that we can pray about anything in our lives. No concern we have is too small for God. He said, “Cry unto him when ye are in your fields, yea, over all your flocks. Cry unto him in your houses, yea, over all your household, both morning, mid-day, and evening” (Alma 34:20–21).

Meaningful prayers lead to meaningful answers

The very last chapter of the Book of Mormon includes a powerful message about how we should pray, and what happens when our prayers are heartfelt and genuine. The prophet Moroni taught, “If ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth … unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost” (Moroni 10:4).

Prayer is a central element of the Book of Mormon, and it can be a central and incredibly enriching part of our daily lives.
