Prophets have always served as God’s messengers to His children. Today, a living prophet leads The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following the prophet’s counsel can help you draw closer to God and become a better person through Jesus Christ.

What are prophets?

A prophet is God’s messenger. The Bible teaches us that “surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).

God loves us and wants us to succeed in returning to live with Him someday. He helps each of us individually through answers to our prayers. He also helps us collectively through prophets He chooses as messengers to lead and guide His children and through Apostles who assist the prophet in leading the Church and act as special witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Today, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are chosen by the prophet of the Church, through revelation from God. When the prophet passes away, the most senior Apostle, who has been serving the longest, becomes the next prophet and President of the Church.

Why do we need prophets?

Following the prophet can help you live a happier, more fulfilling life as you follow God’s plan of happiness.

Prophets preach repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, warn of the consequences of sin, and provide divinely inspired leadership for the Savior’s Church. They also help us by giving counsel from God that is specific to our time. For example, former prophet and President of the Church, Russell M. Nelson, encouraged us to be peacemakers on social mediasomething that didn't exist in biblical times.

Now is the time to bury your weapons of war. If your verbal arsenal is filled with insults and accusations, now is the time to put them away. You will arise as a spiritually strong man or woman of Christ.”

—President Russell M. Nelson, “Peacemakers Needed,” Liahona, May 2023, 101

How was Jesus Christ’s Church restored through a prophet?

While Jesus Christ was on the earth, He established His Church and called twelve Apostles to help lead it. But when Jesus left the earth, His Apostles were killed and parts of His Church were lost over time. Important truths were forgotten. The priesthood authority from God that Jesus had given His Apostles to act in God’s name was lost.

In 1820, Joseph Smith prayed about the welfare of his soul and which church he should join. God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and told him not to join any of the churches on the earth but that instead the fulness of the gospel would be restored through him. Later, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially established, with Joseph acting as the first prophet and President of the Church. God’s priesthood authority was restored to the earth, and God revealed important truths about His plan of happiness that had been lost.

How can I receive God’s word for me today?

You can fill your life with more comfort, inspiration, and guidance through the words of ancient prophets in the scriptures and the teachings of modern-day prophets and apostles. Missionaries can make that easier—they’ll help you find personal answers to your questions, study the scriptures with you, and share counsel from God’s living prophet that can help you be happier.

Ways to get guidance from prophets and apostles:

  • Think about why God has chosen to use prophets to share His will to the world.
  • Ponder how being able to listen to a living, modern-day prophet could impact your life for good.
  • Study ancient prophets’ words in the Bible and Book of Mormon.
  • Ask missionaries to introduce you to sermons from modern-day prophets and apostles.
