The Proverbs

A proverb is a short saying that teaches proper and moral behavior. The book of Proverbs gives rather practical advice for living one’s religion and behaving in a proper, moral way. We can all benefit from following the counsel given in this book.

Getting Ready to Study Proverbs

We read in 1 Kings 4:32 that Solomon spoke many proverbs; Proverbs 1:1 says Solomon is the author of the proverbs in this book, although other authors are also mentioned (for example, see Proverbs 30:1; 31:1).

Proverbs contains expressions on a wide variety of topics. One verse may not have anything to do with the verse (proverb) before or after it. Most of the proverbs are written in the Hebrew poetry style described in the introduction to the book of Psalms.

You will study the book of Proverbs like you did the book of Psalms. Rather than studying each chapter, you will study and consider some important verses.
