King Benjamin Preaches to the Nephites, by Gary L. Kapp

After you’ve studied the scripture passages for this week and reviewed the questions and activities in the manual, consider sharing any of the following articles and activities with your family. These additional resources can assist you as you strive to teach the gospel in your home.

Mosiah 2:1–9

Preparing to Hear the Word of God

When King Benjamin spoke to his people, he asked that they open their ears and hearts that they might hear and understand (see Mosiah 2:9). His invitation teaches us how we can prepare to hear the word of God.

  • The Word of God to His Children.” Learn how God speaks with us and how to prepare for general conference in this Ensign article by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency.

  • Saturday Sleep and Sunday Smiles.” In this Friend story, Mara learns that going to bed early Saturday night helps her enjoy Primary more.

  • Conference Reverence Tent.” Read this Friend story to learn how reading about King Benjamin inspires one family to be reverent while they watch general conference.

Mosiah 2:10–26

King Benjamin’s statement that “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17) helps us understand the spiritual significance of helping others. In what ways does serving others bring us closer to God?

  • The Needs before Us.” In this general conference address, Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, former Young Women General President, reminds us that “some of the most significant needs we can meet are within our own families, among our friends, in our wards, and in our communities.”

  • We Want to Serve!” In this New Era article, read about youth who decided to serve the homeless, lonely, and elderly for their youth conference.

  • Ellie Helps Clean the Church.” This story from the Friend shows how Ellie serves by helping her family clean. Includes an activity page.

  • Gratitude Tower of Service.” Use this activity from the Ensign series “Family Study Fun” to help your family understand the value of service.

  • Service Survey.” Use this activity sheet from the Friend to help your children find ideas for serving others.

  • The Coat.” Watch this animated video with your family to see a child’s example of selfless service (from the life of President Heber J. Grant, seventh President of the Church).
