The 1985 New Era Contest Winners:
Kaleidoscope of Your Creation
Last September we asked you to seal the brightly colored fragments of your experience and insight into the kaleidoscope of your talent and training and turn, turn, turn them until something wonderful happened. You did, and it did, and the results are breathtaking. Through your eyes and your craft we have seen the world transformed.
The kaleidoscope of your poetry sparkled with licorice-sticky puddles; boulders of thunder; the bright-green, well-fed snake of an irrigation tube; and an old man whose fingers balance sea, air, and stars.
Your art kaleidoscope created wonderful pastel still lifes, and your photography delivered, as requested, a kaleidoscope full of people.
The bright patterns of the winning article chronicled the maturing of a childlike faith in prayer, and the shifting colors of fiction taught us the importance of never giving up on those we love.
In music, the kaleidoscopic images took on the solemn grandeur of stained glass. The winning hymn sings praise to Zion’s King, and the winning song testifies that “He is not here, for he is risen.”
This issue is full of the light which shines through your art. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
