“Sand Castles,” New Era, Aug. 1985, 30
Sand Castles
Fine grains of sand
cling to your fingers
as you press warmth
into little turrets
and gables
around my heart.
Gently, you mold the
lumps of fuzzy
brownness
into
sleek, smooth towers,
shiny and soft.
One careless movement
and the warmth
crumples,
caving in on its own
empty shell,
to be sucked by the
wet foam into the
bitter, frothy sea.
