So You’re Going to College

“So You’re Going to College,” New Era, Mar. 1971, 19

So You’re Going to College

About this time of year throughout North America, several million students make plans concerning where they would like to go to college in the fall. Most of them are graduating high school seniors, but an increasingly large number of them are students who switch from one campus to another, or young adults who have worked or served in the military for several years and now have decided to get more schooling.

Among the vast number of college students around the world are an estimated 225,000 Latter-day Saint students.

And the Latter-day Saint student has special interests.

He wants to know how many fellow Latter-day Saint students he can expect to find at a school he is considering. He wants to know if he will have access to an Institute of religion so he can continue his study of the gospel and enjoy Mormon social life.

He wants to know if he will attend a student ward or a regular ward or branch of the Church.

With these things in mind, for many persons the following information may be helpful.

1. We have listed here every college or locale at which a student has access to an institute of religion.

2. We have listed the known number of Latter-day Saint students at the school (known to the office of the Church Commissioner of Education). It is estimated that there may be as many as twenty-five percent more Mormon students actually on some of the campuses.

3. We have listed the locations of student wards and branches—those composed wholly of college students.

But whichever school you choose, the major point to emphasize is that wherever you are, you are only a telephone call away from the Church. Look for the name of the Church in the telephone book. Each of us at baptism made important covenants with the Lord, and the boys took additional responsibility when they received the priesthood. Each of us is expected to use his free agency to hunt out the church. Sometimes it can’t find us, but we can always find it. One telephone call to the local bishop or branch president will mean a warm reception for you. Have a great collegiate experience!

Statement of the First Presidency on College Attendance (January 20, 1970)

“We have repeatedly urged that our young people seek further education after completing high school, and we now reaffirm this counsel. In so doing, we suggest that wherever possible they attend school in their own communities, particularly during their freshman and sophomore years.

“To meet the need for religious instruction for our youth, we have established institutes of religion convenient to more than 200 junior colleges, four-year colleges, and universities. In these institutes our young people may receive religious training comparable with that received in Church schools and at the same time enjoy the benefits of living at home, at less expense, with the added advantages of the protection, guidance, and companionship of their families.”
