In John 14–16, Jesus Christ repeatedly tells His Apostles that they will receive the Comforter after He’s gone. We often think of the Comforter as the one who gives us peace when we’re stressed or scared. But the gift of the Holy Ghost does much more for us, including help us fulfill our purpose as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our purpose? To become like our Master

“A disciple is one who has been baptized and is willing to take upon him or her the name of the Savior and follow Him. A disciple strives to become as He is by keeping His commandments in mortality, much the same as an apprentice seeks to become like his or her master” (Robert D. Hales, “Becoming a Disciple of Our Lord Jesus Christ,” Liahona, May 2017, 46).

After the Savior’s death, His disciples used the gift of the Comforter to continue to become like their Master. In the following scriptures, how does the Comforter help them?

Acts 2:1–8

How does the Spirit help the disciples preach the gospel?

Acts 4:1–3, 7–13

How does the Spirit help Peter and John stand as witnesses of Christ?

Acts 6:8–15

How does the Spirit help Stephen work miracles?

Acts 8:5, 14–17

How does the Spirit help Philip, Peter, and John love and sacrifice for their neighbors?

Acts 13:1–4

How does the Spirit help leaders of the Church know and act on God’s will?
