Why do we need to perform baptisms for deceased ancestors?

Jesus Christ taught that all people must be baptized to enter God’s kingdom after this life (see John 3:5). But many people never had that opportunity.

God has revealed that those who have passed away who were not baptized can have the gospel of Jesus Christ preached to them in the spirit world (see 1 Peter 3:18–19; Doctrine and Covenants 138:30–33). He has also revealed that the living can be baptized on behalf of these people (see 1 Corinthians 15:29; Doctrine and Covenants 124; 128). These baptisms must be done here on the earth.

We can search for records of deceased ancestors and perform baptisms for them in temples. This gives them the opportunity to accept baptism, which is necessary for the celestial kingdom.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson has said: “Our efforts on behalf of the dead bear eloquent witness that Jesus Christ is the divine Redeemer of all mankind. His grace and promises reach even those who in life do not find Him” (Oct. 2000 general conference [Ensign, Nov. 2000, 11]).
