Check out the story behind Bailey’s song from the 2015 Mutual theme album.
The music from the 2015 Mutual theme album was written and performed by youth. This is Bailey’s story about writing her song, “Someone He Can Count On.”
Sometimes it feels like we are so worried about what everybody else thinks of us that we get lost, and it’s impossible to hear Heavenly Father speaking to us.
That is why I wanted to write a song about becoming someone He can count on. It doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks of you—it matters what Heavenly Father thinks of you. If you can be that person He can count on, then that means the world.
It doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks of you—it matters what Heavenly Father thinks of you. If you can be that person He can count on, then that means the world.
Last summer, I went to youth conference in Moab, Utah. One night we hiked up to Delicate Arch and had a devotional under the stars. Afterward, the Spirit was really strong and as I was sitting there, I realized how much He loves me and knows me. I decided to say a prayer, and a few questions kept recurring in my mind: Can I be someone He can count on to do whatever He needs me to do? Can I really follow everything it says in For the Strength of Youth? Can I read in the scriptures and pray and truly follow Him the best I can? I was immediately inspired with the answers to what I was asking Him.
I decided when school started up again I would not let what anyone else thinks of me matter, because all that matters is what He thinks of me. I wouldn’t let Him down and would try my hardest to be someone He can count on.
You’ll notice the instrumentation of the song is not super upbeat or super loud. The message isn’t hitting you in the face. It’s subtle and you can just listen to the lyrics and have them speak to you. I like that because it’s easier to feel the Spirit that way. With all the noise that’s in the world, it’s just easier to have something that’s mellow and laid back. You can just sit and listen to the lyrics and the Spirit.
A Prophet’s Words
As you listen to the song, listen for the line where it says, “I can’t think of anything more sweet than to follow where the Spirit leads, be the answer to someone else’s prayer.”
I love that line. It was inspired by President Monson when he said: “The sweetest experience I know in life is to feel a prompting and act upon it and later find out that it was the fulfillment of someone’s prayer or someone’s need. And I always want the Lord to know that if He needs an errand run, Tom Monson will run that errand for Him” (On the Lord’s Errand).
I love that. I want to be like that. Heavenly Father has entrusted me, and all of us, to listen to Him when He’s speaking. He’s counting on us to be the answer to somebody’s prayer.
