In the scriptures, poor can refer to (1) people who are without needed material goods, such as food, clothing, and shelter, or (2) people who are humble and without pride.
Thou shalt not shut thine hand from thy poor brother, Deut. 15:7 .
The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor, Ps. 10:2 .
He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack, Prov. 28:27 .
Bring the poor to thy house, Isa. 58:6–7 .
If thou wilt be perfect, give to the poor, Matt. 19:21 (Mark 10:21 ; Luke 18:22 ).
Hath not God chosen the poor of this world, James 2:5 .
Because they are rich they despise the poor, 2Â Ne. 9:30 .
To retain a remission of your sins, impart of your substance to the poor, Mosiah 4:26 .
