Apply Doctrinal Mastery Passages

One of the purposes of doctrinal mastery is to help you learn how to apply the doctrinal mastery passages to your own life. This lesson will give you opportunities to practice applying some of the doctrinal mastery passages to a variety of realistic situations.

Student preparation: Invite students to use the Doctrinal Mastery app or other methods to practice memorizing the New Testament doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases. Ask them to come to class prepared to share one passage they have had experiences applying.

Possible Learning Activities

Apply gospel principles

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, then of the First Presidency, explained the importance of applying gospel principles. Watch the video “On Being Genuine,” from time code 11:24 to 12:02, available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org, or read the following statement.

Here in the Church of Jesus Christ you can mature spiritually and draw closer to the Savior by applying gospel principles day by day.

With patience and persistence, even the smallest act of discipleship or the tiniest ember of belief can become a blazing bonfire of a consecrated life. In fact, that’s how most bonfires begin—as a simple spark.

(Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “On Being Genuine,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2015, 82)

Think about some gospel truths you have recently applied to your life.

  • How did knowing those truths shape the choices you made?

In this lesson you will have the opportunity to participate in activities that can help you apply gospel principles day by day.

Review the doctrinal mastery passages

Reviewing the doctrinal mastery references and key phrases should take only a small portion of the class. This part of the activity is intended to help students recall the passages and quickly identify truths they have already learned.

Briefly look over the following doctrinal mastery passages, and think about what you have done to live them.

Display the following chart so students can refer to it throughout the lesson.

New Testament Doctrinal Mastery: 1 Corinthians–Revelation

1 Corinthians 6:19–20

“Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.”

1 Corinthians 11:11

“Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 15:20–22

“As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

1 Corinthians 15:40–42

In the Resurrection, there are three degrees of glory.

Ephesians 1:10

“In the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ.”

Ephesians 2:19–20

The Church is “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.”

2 Thessalonians 2:1–3

“The day of Christ … shall not come, except there come a falling away first.”

2 Timothy 3:15–17

“The holy scriptures … are able to make thee wise unto salvation.”

Hebrews 12:9

Heavenly Father is “the Father of spirits.”

James 1:5–6

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”

James 2:17–18

“Faith, if it hath not works, is dead.”

1 Peter 4:6

“The gospel [was] preached also to them that are dead.”

Revelation 20:12

“And the dead were judged … according to their works.”

Apply truths to life

It can be helpful to watch how others apply gospel truths. If possible, watch the video “Teachings of Thomas S. Monson: Rescuing Those in Need” (0:30 to 5:01), available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org. Look for how people lived by the truth “faith, if it hath not works, is dead” (James 2:17).

  • How did people apply this truth?

Think about how knowing and living gospel truths has helped you in the past, helps you now, and can help you in the future. Complete the following activity to help you practice applying truths from the doctrinal mastery passages you have studied.

One way to adapt this activity is to invite each student to do the following steps:

  1. Select one doctrinal mastery passage, and write the reference and key phrase on a piece of paper. Include your name on the paper.

  2. Switch papers with another student, and follow the instruction listed below under the heading “Past.”

  3. Switch papers again, and complete the instructions for “Present.”

  4. Switch papers a final time, and follow the instructions for “Future.”

  5. Return the papers to the original student.

When the activity is finished, consider having students share something that a classmate wrote that they liked or that impressed them.

Past

Think of a time when you relied on one of the truths from a doctrinal mastery passage. If you cannot think of a specific time in your life, think about an individual you know or someone from an account in the scriptures who was blessed as they acted on a truth in a doctrinal mastery passage.

Record blessings that came from living this truth. Be sure to explain how it has increased or can increase your confidence in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Present

Think about your current needs and circumstances. Review the doctrinal mastery passages, and select a passage you feel you could better follow in your life. Record what you can do to act in faith and apply the passage.

Future

Select a doctrinal mastery passage, and write a scenario that could happen to you in the future in which the truths taught in the passage could help you act in faith.

It may be helpful to remind students of Elder Uchtdorf’s teachings from the beginning of the lesson. Discussing questions like the following can help students reflect on the importance of applying gospel truths to their lives.

Reflect on how knowing and acting on truth has influenced your life and decisions.

  • How has living the gospel helped strengthen your faith in Christ?

  • What can you do to better remember Christ’s truths as you make choices in the future?

Supplemental Learning Activity

Acting it out

Consider dividing the class into small groups and inviting them to create and act out scenarios in which truths from the doctrinal mastery passages could help. Students who are watching the scenario could then think about truths from the doctrinal mastery passages that could help someone in the scenario act in faith. Another variation of this activity could be to invite groups to act out a scenario, including how to act faithfully in the given situation, using one of the doctrinal mastery passages as their guide.
