What Do I Do During Language Study?

Follow Preach My Gospel Principles

Preach My Gospel teaches you how to prepare yourself spiritually and make your study meaningful. It will also help you learn how to seek the gift of tongues and apply the principles of language learning. Regularly review the principles taught in Preach My Gospel, chapter 7 and seek to follow them during your language study.

Create a Language Study Plan

“A language study plan helps both new and experienced missionaries focus on what they can do each day to improve their ability” (Preach My Gospel, 141). Consider applying the goal-setting process taught in Preach My Gospel, chapter 8, to help you learn English.

  1. Set weekly and daily goals for learning English.

  2. Record and schedule which EnglishConnect lessons, learner manuals, workbooks, and online resources you will use, when you will use them, and how you plan to involve your companion.

  3. Act on your plans.

  4. Review and follow up. Review your study plan often to evaluate how well it is working.

Apply the principles in Preach My Gospel, chapter 7, to improve your study. See the following example study plans for additional help based on your level:

Review and Follow Up

When you complete the activities in a lesson, use the lesson self-checks to assess your learning. When you have completed all the activities for a level, take the post-test for that level. When you feel ready, you can move to the next level. Self-checks and online activities can be found at missionary.englishconnect.org. Periodically, take time to evaluate how you can use the principles in Preach My Gospel, chapter 7, to improve your study.

How Will I Track My Progress?

Every four months you will receive an email inviting you to take an assessment of your English language ability. After completing the assessment, you will receive a progress report. This report will help you track your progress and learn ways to improve. During your last transfer, you will take a final assessment and receive a certificate. You can access your assessments on the Missionary Portal language-learning page to track your progress.

Learning a language “requires diligent effort and the gifts of the Spirit. Do not be surprised if the task seems hard. It takes time. Be patient with yourself. … Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will help you as you seek Their help” (Preach My Gospel, 139–40).
