“It Is by Me That Ye Are Led”

Introduction and Impressions

Even when I give my best efforts to keeping the commandments, some things in my life do not go smoothly. Lehi’s family obeyed the Lord’s command to leave Jerusalem and then faced very difficult trials on their journey. A bow was broken, food was scarce, and a ship had to be built. Nephi’s unwavering trust in God can strengthen my confidence that when I keep the commandments, God will guide, comfort, and support me through all the circumstances of my life.

Record Impressions

It is very important that you seek impressions from the Spirit to help you and your family. Therefore, before reading the rest of this study outline, read 1 Nephi 16–22. What messages do you find for your life? What will be of most value to you and your family? What can you share in your Church classes? Record your thoughts and impressions below or in a journal or notebook.

Ideas for Personal Learning

1 Nephi 16:10, 26–31. The Lord will guide me in small and simple ways if I heed His direction.

The Lord did not provide Lehi with a detailed travel plan from Jerusalem to the promised land. Instead He gave Lehi the Liahona—an instrument that guided his family step-by-step toward their destination. As I read about the Liahona, what principles do I learn about how God guides His children? How does He guide me?

1 Nephi 16:14–39; 17:1–20, 50–51; 18:1–8. When I face challenges with faith, God will provide direction and strength.

When Nephi faced challenges, he trusted God and sought His guidance. Others in his family lacked faith and complained. Why was Nephi able to remain faithful? What did he do to show both his trust in God and his willingness to do all he could by his own power? What can I learn from Nephi’s example about how to face challenges?

1 Nephi 21:13–16. The Savior has promised that He will never forget me.

To persuade his brothers to believe more fully in the Savior, Nephi shared the words of Isaiah with them, now recorded in 1 Nephi 20 and 21 (see also 1 Nephi 19:23–24). How does 1 Nephi 21:15–16 help me have greater faith in Jesus Christ? What additional verses in 1 Nephi 20–21 help me to trust more completely in the Savior?

Ideas for Family Learning

Family Discussions

1 Nephi 16:10, 26–31. What has the Lord given us to provide guidance in our lives? What do we learn from these verses about how to receive guidance from the Lord?

1 Nephi 17:8–13; 18:1–4. What difficult tasks has the Lord asked of our family, and how have we responded?

1 Nephi 18:11–13, 21. How do our choices affect the way God can guide us?

Family Home Evening

1 Nephi 19:22–24. We can liken the scriptures to ourselves.

Nephi taught that we should “liken all scriptures” to ourselves (1 Nephi 19:23). As we liken the scriptures to ourselves as a family, we might act out several stories from 1 Nephi 16–18 and then discuss how each story applies to us. For example, how is Nephi’s experience with building a ship similar to accepting a difficult Church assignment or serving a full-time mission? What can we learn from Nephi’s example about how to respond to those who tease and make fun of us for doing what is right?
