Isaiah 40–49

What Did Isaiah Teach about Being a Servant of the Lord?

The Lord often refers to His followers as His servants or witnesses. Those terms are common throughout the scriptures, and the book of Isaiah is no exception. In Old Testament times, as well as today, the Lord gave people opportunities to serve Him and be a witness of Him.

  • As you read Isaiah chapters 40–49, look for the times when the Lord says “servant” or “witness.” Whom is He referring to? Look for verses that teach how you can be a witness and a servant to the Lord, such as Isaiah 44:2.

  • Then, as you read chapters 41–44, you might consider which verses can apply to your calling or ministering. What is the Lord asking you to do, and how will He help you?

  • What opportunities have you been given to be the Lord’s servant or witness? Examples could be a calling, mission, teaching your family, or other service. You might list those experiences in your journal. What did you learn from them? How did the Lord help you?
