“Led by Living Prophets,” Liahona, Sept. 2022.
Gospel Basics
Led by Living Prophets
Prophets are men who are called by Heavenly Father to speak for Him. They testify of Jesus Christ and teach His gospel. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe in both ancient and modern prophets.
God Speaks through Prophets
Prophets receive revelation from God. When prophets are inspired to teach us, it is the same as if God were speaking to us (see Doctrine and Covenants 1:38). We can trust that they are telling us what God would want us to know.
Prophets Teach of Jesus Christ
All prophets testify of Jesus Christ. They teach us that He is the Son of God. They teach us about His life, example, and Atonement. And they show us how to follow Him and obey His commandments.
Responsibilities of Prophets
Prophets teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. They explain the blessings we receive when we obey the commandments and the consequences we receive if we do not. At times, they may be inspired to tell us about future events.
Ancient Prophets
Moses and the Tablets, by Jerry Harston
God has taught people through prophets since the beginning. Prophets who lived in Old Testament times include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, and others. There were also prophets among the Book of Mormon people. These prophets included Lehi, Mosiah, Alma, and Moroni. We can learn what they taught by reading the scriptures.
Modern Prophets
Joseph Smith was the first prophet in modern times. He restored the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth. Russell M. Nelson is the prophet and President of the Church today. His counselors in the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles are also prophets, seers, and revelators.
Listening to the Prophet
The prophet speaks to us during general conference and at other times. He teaches us what God wants us to know and how to follow Jesus Christ today. We can find his teachings in the Liahona and at ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
Blessings of Following the Prophet
We will be blessed if we follow the prophet’s teachings. When we follow the prophet, we can know that we are doing what God would have us do. We can feel peace in our lives and come closer to Jesus Christ.
