Let’s Talk about Money!

More specifically, let’s read about when Jesus taught about money.

Jesus speaks about money a handful of times in the scriptures.

Does “treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20), the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14–30), or “bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse” (Malachi 3:10) sound familiar? Let’s review!

Needs vs. Wants

Jesus knows there are many things you need (for example, food) and want (for example, games). He teaches, “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt” (Matthew 6:19–21). Much of what money buys only wears away, so be mindful about what you purchase.

You can be mindful with money as you separate your needs from your wants. Think to yourself, “Am I buying this because I need it or because I want it?” If you aren’t sure, try waiting a month; after that time passes, ask those questions again. By doing this, you can avoid buying things on impulse and trying to impress others. Instead, you’ll make smart decisions about when to save and when to spend money.

Using Money to Bless Others

In the parable of the talents, Jesus describes a master who gives different amounts of money (called “talents”) to three servants. Two servants double the money they were given, and one servant buries his money. When the master returns, he is happy with the two servants who increased their talents and unhappy with the servant who did not (see Matthew 25:14–30).

Just as the master in the parable gave his servants talents, when God blesses you with money, He expects you to use your finances to bless yourself and others. As you take care of others, you fulfill Jesus’s commandment to “love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:31).

It’s OK to buy nice things, but you should consider the needs of yourself and others before you make a purchase. As you think about the needs of others, God will help you know how to use money to bless the people in your life.

Blessings for Tithing

If you worry you won’t have enough money because you pay tithing, read these comforting words from God: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse … and prove me now herewith … if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10). If you pay your tithing, God will bless you more than you can imagine!

You may not be blessed in temporal ways—you may not have the money you want to buy an expensive shirt you like, so you may need to delay instant-gratification. But the Lord will bless you. Over time, you’ll find it easier to pay tithing, and your spirit will be more resilient against the financial worries you have.

God Will Help You

Russell M. Nelson

Trust in President Russell M. Nelson’s words: “There is no limit to the Savior’s capacity to help you” (Oct. 2024 general conference [Liahona, Nov. 2024, 122]). By mindfully using your money to meet your needs, care for others, and pay your tithing, you will discover a deeper love for God and others and an appreciation for what you have.
