Happiness through Turning Outward

Rely on the Lord to find joy for yourself, and help others feel it too.

Sometimes when we’re anxious or depressed, we might feel like we have no energy—or even desire—to reach out and serve. But the Lord can bless us as we try. Here are three ideas.

1. Look to the Lord, Share What You Learn

After the sons of Mosiah were converted to the Lord, they became great missionaries, but they were not always successful. Unsurprisingly, they became discouraged. The Lord comforted them, saying, “Bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success” (Alma 26:27).

When has the Lord comforted you? Share your experience with someone who might need encouragement.

2. Be Intentional in the Temple

When we need an emotional boost, being in the temple can help us feel peace. After the earth was broken up and immersed in darkness following Christ’s Crucifixion, the Nephites gathered around the temple. After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared and ministered to them (see 3 Nephi 11:1–15).

Think about any special experiences you’ve had in the temple, near the temple, or hearing about the temple. Every time you serve in the temple or do family history work, you are ministering as Jesus lived and taught. You’re bringing souls closer to Him one by one.

3. Use Your Talents to Serve

When Jesus learned that His cousin, John the Baptist, had been killed, He “departed … into a desert place apart” (Matthew 14:13). But when He saw a large group of people who had followed Him, He continued His ministry, healing the sick and even performing the miracle of feeding thousands by multiplying the loaves and fish (see Matthew 14:14–21).

The Lord has given us gifts to help bless others (see Doctrine and Covenants 46:11, 26). Think of something you like to do, and turn it into an act of service. It could be anything, from baking for someone to walking their dog!
