Do You Know?

Abraham and Isaac, his son, were living in Canaan, and Isaac was old enough to get married. Because he didn’t want Isaac to marry a Canaanite woman, Abraham sent his servant to the land where he, Abraham, came from. The servant was to find a wife for Isaac among Abraham’s relatives.

When the servant reached the well at the outskirts of the city of Nahor, he found a woman who would please both Abraham and Isaac and persuaded her to go back to Canaan with him. How did he find her? Do you know?

1. He gathered all the marriageable women among Abraham’s relatives and asked if one of them would volunteer to marry Isaac.

2. He met all the marriageable women among Abraham’s relatives and chose the prettiest for Isaac.

3. He went to the patriarch of Abraham’s relatives living in Nahor, and together they decided who would marry Isaac and what her dowry would be.

4. He prayed that whoever watered his camels at the well would be Isaac’s bride.

Answer:

• The servant asked Heavenly Father to have Isaac’s future wife be the one who not only gave him a drink but also offered to water his camels (answer D). Heavenly Father did as the servant asked, and Rebekah, Abraham’s grandniece, gave water to both the servant and his camels. The servant stayed with Rebekah’s family that night; then she and her maidservants left with the servant for Canaan. Rebekah was pretty, righteous, and faithful, and Isaac loved her and married her. (See Gen. 24.)
