“Silent Song,” Friend, Oct. 1972, inside front cover
Silent Song
Do you know of a song without words
And without a tune to hear?
A song that is just a feeling—
A bright melody sweet and clear?
I have a silent singing song
That lies deep inside of me.
I feel it when I look upon
Our scarlet maple tree.
I feel it when I see a gull
Fly high in the autumn sky,
Or when I see white milkweed seeds
Float free as their pods are dry.
I feel the lilting melody
When all earth’s autumn face
Is filled with soft warm color,
And beauty is every place.
Perhaps the song is happiness—
Perhaps it’s made of love
And thankfulness for autumn joy
And all blessings from above.
