Marking Scriptures

Define

Explain that marking the scriptures in meaningful ways can enhance gospel study and understanding. Marking helps emphasize what we find most important and can help us when teaching others. People who choose to mark their scriptures can do so in a variety of ways, like highlighting, underlining, circling, or adding symbols to distinguish words, phrases, or passages.

Model

Briefly model marking scriptures mark iconby doing one or more of the following:

  • Show students a few different ways they could mark a scripture passage—such as underlining, highlighting, or using other marks or symbols.

  • Ask a few students to briefly share how they like to mark their scriptures.

  • Invite students who know how to mark digital scriptures on Gospel Library to demonstrate how to do this to their classmates in small groups.

Note: You can find additional resources, tips, and videos in the “Help” section of the Gospel Library app, including the “Gospel Library User Guide (iOS)” and the “Gospel Library User Guide (Android).”

Practice

Select a passage from this week’s scripture study or use one of the examples provided below, and invite students to practice marking scriptures. Students could mark words, phrases, or truths that stand out to them. They could then share in pairs or small groups what they marked and why they marked it.

Additional passages for practice:

  • Psalm 23. Students could mark favorite phrases and passages that teach them about the Lord.

  • Matthew 5:38–48. Students could mark teachings of the Savior that stand out to them.

  • Mosiah 18:8–10. Students could mark phrases that indicate commitments we make at baptism.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 38:1–9. Students could mark words or phrases that teach them about Jesus Christ.

Invite and Follow Up

Encourage students to mark their scriptures during their personal scripture study and during class. Follow up during the next class by inviting students to share something meaningful they marked during their personal study and why they marked it. You might ask how marking scriptures helps them in their scripture study. Look for ways to continue reviewing and practicing this skill in class.
