“This Do in Remembrance of Me”

Visit “Studying the Scriptures” to help prepare yourself spiritually to learn.

Why do you think it’s important to remember Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? To help the children of Israel remember that He delivered them from Egypt, the Lord instituted the Feast of the Passover. During Jesus Christ’s mortal life, He instituted the sacrament, which was a new way to always remember Him. This lesson can help you remember the Savior as you prepare for and partake of the sacrament.

Jesus Christ teaches about the sacrament

Imagine you heard that Jesus Christ would be personally visiting your next sacrament meeting. Think about how you would feel in the days leading up to the meeting. What would you do differently to prepare? What would you do the same?

As you study today, seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost to help you know what you can do to remember the Savior and what He has done for you.

When the Lord commanded the children of Israel to prepare the first Passover meal, He also commanded them to continue it “throughout [their] generations” (Exodus 12:14). Read the following verses. Mark words and phrases that indicate what the Lord wanted them to remember and do.

Record your response to the following question in your notebook:

  • What was preparing and partaking of the Passover meal designed to help the Israelites remember about the Lord?

In our day the Lord has also lovingly provided opportunities to remember Jesus Christ. We can partake of the sacrament in remembrance of our Savior. Look at the following pictures of the Passover and the sacrament. Think about how they are similar.

Read Luke 22:13–15, 19–20. Compare these verses to the verses you read about the Passover. You could also watch “The Last Supper” from timecode 2:13 to 3:15.

You may want to link Luke 22:19–20 to Exodus 13:3. How is the sacrament ordinance like Passover? How is it different?

In your notebook, write your response to the following question:

How is providing experiences like Passover and the sacrament an expression of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s love for us?

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained one reason why Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ encourage us to remember Them:

14:40
Elder Dale G. Renlund

Our Heavenly Father wants us to recall His and His Beloved Son’s goodness … for the influence such remembrance has on us. By considering Their kindness, our perspective and understanding are enlarged. By reflecting on Their compassion, we become more humble, prayerful, and steadfast. (“Consider the Goodness and Greatness of God,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2020, 41)

Review the following study options. Complete one or more. Then complete the Now What? section at the end of the lesson.

Option A

How can I remember the Savior before, during, and after the sacrament?

Choose two or more of the following resources to help you in your efforts to remember Jesus Christ.

  • Doctrine and Covenants 20:77, 79 (the sacrament prayers)

  • Brother Milton Camargo, former First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency:

    10:58

Renewing our covenants during the sacrament each Sunday is a great opportunity to examine ourselves and refocus our lives on Jesus Christ. By partaking of the sacrament, we declare that we do “always remember him” [Moroni 4:3]. The word always is so significant. It extends the Savior’s influence into every part of our lives. We don’t remember Him only at church or only during our morning prayers or only when we’re in trouble and we need something.

Yes, we sometimes get distracted. We forget. We lose our focus. But renewing our covenants means that we want to always remember the Savior, that we will try to do so throughout the week, and that we will recommit and refocus on Him again at the sacrament table next week. (“Focus on Jesus Christ,” Liahona, May 2023, 65)

  • That They Do Always Remember Him” (6:29)

  • Inspiring Short: Always Remember Being Saved” (2:51)

Option B

How can the hymns help me remember Jesus Christ?

President Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reminded us:

18:57
President Jeffrey R. Holland

The administration and passing of the sacrament is preceded by a hymn which all of us should sing. It doesn’t matter what kind of musical voice we have. Sacramental hymns are more like prayers anyway—and everyone can give voice to a prayer! (“This Do in Remembrance of Me,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 68)

Look in the hymnbook for a sacrament hymn that can help you remember the Savior. Find a way to keep the words of the hymn with you and look at them each day this week. You could commit the song to memory or write the lyrics on a piece of paper and carry it with you.

Now What?

Think about the last time you partook of the sacrament. How effective were you at focusing on Jesus Christ?

What did you do to remember Him that was helpful? What distractions got in the way of remembering Him?

Create a list of at least five things you can do this week to prepare for the sacrament and to help you remember Jesus Christ.

Make a plan to practice items on your list this week as you prepare to partake of the sacrament and remember your Savior.
