Marking Your Scriptures

God hears and speaks to His children. When He spoke to His children in the past, they recorded their stories. Those stories are recorded in scripture. How will you record and remember what God says to you? This is a guide to help you learn how to mark your scriptures and remember what God speaks to you.

To Always Remember Him

Have you ever heard something important and tried to write it down so you wouldn’t forget? That can happen to us when we’re studying the scriptures. The scriptures are already written down, so we won’t forget them. But you might forget a personal message from God unless you have some way of remembering it in the future.

To remember what you learn from studying, you can write in your scriptures and take notes. The suggestions below will work for print scriptures and notes, as well as Gospel Library.

Mark to identify important parts of scripture

On print scriptures, you can use a pencil or pen to underline, highlight, or circle.

In Gospel Library, you can select the text you want to mark and press the “Mark” button. You can choose to mark in several different styles and colors.

Link related scriptures and talks

On print scriptures, you can write a related scripture or general conference talk reference in the margin of the page.

In Gospel Library, you can select the scripture or talk you want to link and press the “Link” button. Then find and select the scripture you want to link to and press “Add.” After you have added all the links you want, press “Save.”

note icon
Note to record thoughts and information

On print scriptures, you can write a short note in the margin of the page. If you need more space, consider using a notebook (see below).

In Gospel Library, select the text you want to write about and press the “Note” button.

tag icon
Tag scriptures by topic

On print scriptures, write the topic it refers to in the margin next to the scripture. You may want to keep a list of topics on a blank page of your scriptures as a reference.

In Gospel Library, select the text or scripture you want to tag and press the “Tag” button. Choose a tag you’ve already created or type in a name for the topic that you will recognize. Then press “Save.” You can find your list of tags on the Home screen (in the app) or the Notes (on the website) section of Gospel Library.

search icon
Search the scriptures and other sources

On print scriptures, you can search for related scriptures using footnotes, the Topical Guide, or Guide to the Scriptures (if it is available).

In Gospel Library, press the “Search” icon, and type in what you are looking for. You can use the filters to narrow your search. You can even type shortened scripture references, such as “1n37,” and tap the recommendation for 1 Nephi 3:7 to go there.

Notebooks collect and organize your thoughts

In a physical notebook, you have more space to write your thoughts, draw pictures, or complete tables.

In Gospel Library, you can use notebooks to collect and organize notes you have already created. You can create a new notebook by going to the Home screen (in the app) or the Notes section (on the website) and pressing the “Notebook” icon. Then press the “+” icon to create a new notebook. Inside a notebook, pressing the “+” icon will also create a new note inside that notebook.

These icons will appear throughout your seminary lessons. When you see one of these icons, use your scriptures as suggested. Doing so will help you turn your scriptures into your own personal gospel library.
