One percent better

Bike Race in Albany, GA

For over a century, Great Britain’s national cycling team had struggled and won only a few medals in Olympic competitions. But in 2003, the team’s coach found one-percent improvements they could make in overlooked and unexpected areas to make the team better. As a result, since 2003, British cyclists have won the Tour de France six times. They also won the most cycling gold medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics (see Michael A. Dunn, “One Percent Better,” Liahona, Nov. 2021).

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained:

Small, steady, incremental spiritual improvements are the steps the Lord would have us take. (“Clean Hands and a Pure Heart,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2007, 82)

You could write your answers to the following questions in a study journal or share them with a friend or family member:

  • What are some spiritual impressions you have received from the Holy Ghost recently? How have you acted on them?

  • What are some small spiritual improvements you have made in your discipleship of Jesus Christ?

  • What are some areas where you might still need to make small spiritual improvements?

Explain the titles and roles of Jesus Christ

As we study the Lord’s words in the Old Testament, we learn more about His titles and roles. Use this diagram to do the following:

2026 Old Testament Seminary Teacher Materials
  1. Write “Jesus Christ” in the center circle.

  2. In the other circles, write some of the titles and roles of Jesus Christ that you have studied in the Old Testament and a verse where you can find them. You can add additional circles for each title you find. It may be helpful to review Isaiah 9:6–7; 53:3–5. (You can find other titles and roles in Isaiah 7:14; 33:22; 40:28; 43:3; 48:17; Jeremiah 17:13; Ezekiel 34:11–13. You could also look up The Names of Christ found on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.)

As you reflect on what the titles and roles of Jesus Christ teach us about Him, select one title or role that stood out to you. Focus on that title or role as you answer one of the following questions:

  • What does this title or role teach you about Jesus Christ?

  • What circumstances in your life could benefit from remembering this title or role of Jesus Christ?

  • How do you see the Savior fulfilling this title or role in your life or in the lives of others today?

Explain Old Testament prophecies concerning the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the latter days

Imagine you have a friend that is interested in learning more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You would like to show your friend that the Bible teaches about the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Think of what you might share with your friend. Then, review the following doctrinal mastery passages. Identify one aspect of the Restoration prophesied in the Old Testament that you could share with your friend.

Isaiah 29:13–14

Ezekiel 37:15–17

Daniel 2:44–45

  • How would you explain this Old Testament prophecy to your friend?

  • What does this prophecy teach you about the Savior and His Church?

Record your answers in your study journal or practice sharing how you would explain the prophecy to a friend, family member, or your teacher.

Feel an increased desire to overcome sin through the Atonement of Jesus Christ

In Isaiah 1:18, the Lord used imagery to help us understand what the Savior can do with our lives as we overcome sin through His Atonement. Imagine you have been asked to give a three- to five-minute talk on overcoming sin through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Write a brief outline of what your talk might look like that includes the following:

  1. What you have learned from the Old Testament. Some examples could include Isaiah 1:18 and Isaiah 53:3–5.

  2. What the Spirit has taught you about the Savior and repentance.

  3. Your feelings about Jesus Christ and His sacrifice that makes it possible to be cleansed of our sins.
