Assess Your Learning, Part 1

Moses 1–5; Abraham 1–3; Genesis 37; 39; 41

Reflecting on and assessing our spiritual learning can help us draw closer to the Savior. This assessment can help you remember and evaluate how your experiences studying Moses 1–5; Abraham 1–3; and Genesis 37; 39; 41 have helped you grow spiritually and come closer to Jesus Christ. Look for opportunities to share some of your responses with friends or with family members.

Note: Before completing this assessment, be sure to complete the required readings if you have not already: Moses 1–5; Abraham 1–3; Genesis 37; 39; 41.

What are you learning? How are you growing?

Zina Flowers and Zina Seeds

Think about the process of a seed becoming a flower.

  • What are some of the things a seed needs to fulfill its potential?

  • In what ways is the process of becoming more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ similar to a seed’s process in becoming a flower?

Take a few minutes to write in your study journal about your progress of becoming more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as you have been studying the Old Testament. As you write, the Holy Ghost can help you remember truths you have learned. The Spirit can also help you recognize ways you have been growing spiritually.

Explaining the effects of the Fall and role of Jesus Christ as our Redeemer

It is important to understand the Fall as part of Heavenly Father’s plan and the Savior’s role as our Redeemer from the effects of the Fall. Select one of the topics below. Review Moses 4:6–13; 22–25; 5:5–12, and think about how you would explain the topic you chose.

  1. Adam and Eve’s choice that led to the Fall

  2. The effects of the Fall for Adam and Eve and all of Heavenly Father’s children

  3. How the Savior redeems us from the effects of the Fall

Record in your study journal how you would explain the topic you chose and practice explaining these topics to a family member, friend, or your seminary teacher.

Increasing our desire to fulfill our divine identity and purpose

Old Testament Lesson 21 - Identity

Draw an outline of a person that could represent you. Within this outline, or near it, write the truths about your divine identity that you have learned recently in the Old Testament. If possible, make these statements personal by using “me” or “I.” Consider using some or all of the following scriptures you have studied recently in to help you:

Abraham 3:22–23

Moses 1:1–11

Moses 1:12–24

Genesis 1:26–27

Then select one of the following activities to complete:

Option A: Describe a few circumstances where knowing these truths could help someone. Explain how these truths could help in each circumstance.

Option B: Complete the following phrases:

Knowing these truths can help me when

  • I think about myself because …

  • I face temptation because …

  • I interact with others because …

  • I make decisions because …

Participating in the gathering of Israel

In the Old Testament, we learn about the Lord’s promise to the house of Israel known as the Abrahamic Covenant. Read Abraham 2:8–11 to review what this covenant is. President Russell M. Nelson encouraged the youth of the Church to help others enter into this covenant with the Lord. This is known as the gathering of Israel. President Nelson shared how we can participate in it:

Anytime we do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—to make and keep their covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel (“Let God Prevail,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2020, 92–93).

Think about how you can actively participate in the gathering of Israel by creating a diagram like the following in your study journal. List your thoughts and feelings in each circle.

Continue to seek the help of the Holy Ghost to know ways you can participate in the gathering of Israel. Even though you may not have done much to help gather Israel, you can begin now. The Lord will bless you and others as you carry out your plan.
