Matthew 8; Mark 2–4; Luke 7

Overview

Jesus demonstrated great power and compassion through the miracles He performed, including raising a widow’s son from the dead and healing a man with palsy. He also calmed a storm on the Sea of Galilee and forgave the sins of a woman who demonstrated her gratitude by washing and anointing His feet.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Matthew 8; Luke 7:11–17

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ’s power to perform miracles in our day and in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ask family members or friends what events in their lives and in the Church they consider to be miracles. Remind them that while some miracles seem dramatic, others are more subtle.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider placing students in breakout rooms to give them an opportunity to share some of the miracles that they prepared to share in the student preparation activity.

Mark 2:1–12

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students increase their understanding that the Savior can heal all kinds of infirmities.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think of an experience when someone they know received a needed blessing from the Savior. How did this person’s blessing affect other people, such as friends and family members? Ask students to consider what they learned through seeing what the Savior did for that person.

Luke 7:36–50

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students exercise faith in Jesus Christ and repent of their sins.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read Luke 7:36–50 and to think about these questions from Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families: New Testament 2023: “Ponder how you are like the woman described in Luke 7:36–50. When have you experienced the tenderness and mercy that the Savior showed her? What do you learn from her example of faith, love, and humility?” (“February 27–March 5. Matthew 8; Mark 2–4; Luke 7: ‘Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee’”).

  • Image: Prepare to display the image found at the beginning of the lesson.

  • Video:His Grace—Am I Beyond Saving?” (6:25). Be sure to watch this video beforehand to determine if the content and topics discussed would be appropriate for the students in your class.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: While reading the verses in Luke 7, set your screen to “Gallery View” so you can see the whole class. Invite the student who read the previous verse to afterward point in a specific direction. Whichever student is being pointed to on your screen can be asked to read the next verse.

Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students receive the Savior’s peace and calm during the struggles they encounter.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to complete the activity in “Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41: Jesus Christ has power to bring peace in the midst of life’s storms,” found in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families: New Testament 2023. Invite students to come prepared to share insights. They could ask family members or friends to participate with them in this activity.

  • Materials for students: Make sure students have writing utensils and a study journal or piece of paper to use during the visualization activity.

  • Video:Peace in Christ” (4:09)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Invite students to hold up to the camera the pictures they drew so that they can see each other’s drawings. Invite a few students to explain to the class what they drew.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 2

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for some of the New Testament doctrinal mastery passages.

Note: A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder how knowing scripture references and what they teach can help them in their lives.

  • Handout: Prepare to display the list of the doctrinal mastery passages and their associated key scripture phrases, or provide it to students as a handout.

  • Materials for students: Make sure students have writing utensils, a study journal, and a piece of paper to use in the memory cards activity.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion:Consider using online games that can allow students to participate together. Several different online tools could be used to match the key phrase with the scripture reference, or students could do fill-in-the-blank activities.
