Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Remembering scripture passages and what they teach can help you in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for some of the New Testament doctrinal mastery passages.

Student preparation: Invite students to ponder how knowing scripture references and what they teach can help them in their lives.

Using the scriptures to share the gospel

Imagine that you are discussing religious beliefs with your friend Sylvia. She attends a local Christian church and is diligent in studying and learning from the Bible. Sylvia asks you about your beliefs about Jesus Christ, baptism, and the priesthood.

Consider the needs of the students in determining how many doctrinal mastery passages to emphasize in this lesson. Display the following chart so students can refer to it until they have completed their cards.

Doctrinal Master - Matthew - John

Memory cards

Adjust the following instructions based on which doctrinal mastery passages will be studied in the lesson. Students who have access to electronic devices could use an app or a program to create the cards on their devices. Otherwise, distribute a piece of paper to each student for this activity.

The following instructions are based on you choosing to learn six references and their key phrases. If you choose to learn more, then you can adjust the activity in a way that will allow you to create a sufficient number of cards.

Using an entire side of a piece of paper, draw two columns with three boxes of equal size in each column. Turn the paper over and do the same on that side. Choose one of the following ways to create memory cards that can help you memorize these scripture references and key phrases.

Option A: Picture memory cards

On one side of the paper, write a scripture reference that you selected in a box.
Flip the paper over. In the same box on the opposite side, draw a simple picture to help you remember the key scripture phrase for the reference. For example, for Matthew 5:14–16 you might draw something like the following to help you remember the key phrase “Let your light so shine before men.”

Repeat these steps for each of the doctrinal mastery passages you selected for this lesson.

Option B: Reference and key phrase memory cards

In your study journal, rewrite each doctrinal mastery passage you selected in a way that helps you better understand the message of the passage. For example, you might rewrite John 3:5 as follows: “Jesus explained that you can’t enter the kingdom of heaven without being baptized and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

On one side of the paper, write a scripture reference in each box.
Flip the paper over, and write the key scripture phrase (displayed in the chart) in the box that has the correct reference on the opposite side. Do this for each box.

Cut out each of the sections into cards, and use them to memorize these scripture references and key phrases. Consider seeking help from family members and friends with your memorization.

Divide students into pairs to start memorizing passages and phrases using the cards. Give students sufficient time for this activity. Consider asking students to switch partners every few minutes. Remind them of the scenario with Sylvia, and give them time to respond to the following questions.

Which passages and key phrases do you feel would be most helpful to Sylvia, and why?
What truths about the Savior could you share with her using these passages?
What are some of the ways that memorizing references and truths from the scriptures can help you?
