Teachings about the Higher Law

“Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect” (3 Nephi 12:48).

Like Jesus’s disciples who gathered to hear the Sermon on the Mount in Galilee, the people who gathered at the temple in Bountiful had lived the law of Moses. But as he taught, Jesus invited the people to live by a higher law, saying: “Those things which were of old time, which were under the law, in me are all fulfilled. Old things are done away, and all things have become new” (3 Nephi 12:46–47).

During the April 2023 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson encouraged us to live in a higher and holier way. He taught:

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to be examples of how to interact with others—especially when we have differences of opinion. One of the easiest ways to identify a true follower of Jesus Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people.

The Savior made this clear in His sermons to followers in both hemispheres. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” He said [Matthew 5:9]. …

The Savior’s message is clear: His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers. …

… How we treat each other really matters! How we speak to and about others at home, at church, at work, and online really matters. Today, I am asking us to interact with others in a higher, holier way. (“Peacemakers Needed,” Liahona, May 2023, 98–99)

The Savior taught that we should love others. What can you do to show love to someone this week? Say a prayer and make a plan to help them. Here are a few ideas!

  • Share a favorite snack or treat.

  • Invite them to play or spend time with you.

  • Write or draw a kind note for them.
