One of the purposes of doctrinal mastery is to help you learn how to apply the doctrine taught in the doctrinal mastery passages to real-life situations. This lesson will give you opportunities to practice applying some of the doctrinal mastery passages you have studied this year to your own life.

Help learners connect gospel principles to daily living. Instead of telling students how to apply gospel truths, help students learn for themselves how to apply the gospel to their personal circumstances. Invite learners to ask God and to listen for promptings from the Spirit to know how they can apply the gospel in their own lives.

Student preparation: Invite students to choose one of the first 12 doctrinal mastery passages that they find meaningful. Encourage students to come prepared to share why their chosen passage is meaningful to them.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught when seminary is in session.

Consider inviting students to move around the room and share the passage they chose with two or three other classmates. You might also share with students a doctrinal mastery passage that is personally meaningful to you.

Connecting gospel truths to your life and circumstances

As you study the scriptures, one way to personalize and apply what you are learning is to try and make connections to your own life and circumstances. For example, you might be struggling with a specific question or challenge. Searching for answers while you read the scriptures is an effective way to increase the relevance of your study.

Activity A

Consider inviting students to list on the board various challenges in the world. Divide students into pairs and assign each pair one of the challenges. Students could create a scenario and then role-play with each other. One student could describe the challenge, and the other could choose a doctrinal mastery passage from the chart and try to resolve the challenge using the truths from that passage. Students could then switch roles, or you could invite them to role-play their scenario in front of the class.

Another option is to assign students a doctrinal mastery passage and then create scenarios based on challenges the passage could address.

  • Are there any doctrinal mastery passages that you think address the problem? How would the world be different if most people applied the truths from your chosen passage? Share one or two specific examples.

  • Using the doctrine from your chosen passage, what might you say to someone who is facing this challenge?

Activity B

Consider inviting students to complete this activity quietly on their own. If not too personal, you could invite students to share their thoughts and impressions about their chosen doctrinal mastery passage and how it might help them become more like Jesus Christ.

Think about your current circumstances, including any personal questions, challenges, or behaviors that you might be seeking help with. Review the list of doctrinal mastery passages, looking for truths that can help you with these questions, challenges, or behaviors. Choose at least one passage that might help you with something you are facing right now.

  • How can applying the doctrine from your chosen passage be a blessing to your life and circumstances?

  • How can applying the truths from that passage help you feel closer to Jesus Christ and become more like Him?

  • What are one or two small steps you can take to begin applying these truths to your life?
