The Church Is Here
Democratic Republic of the Congo
The first converts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were baptized outside the country before returning to their homeland and sharing their faith with others. When missionaries arrived in the DRC in 1986, there were already groups of converts meeting each week. The first stake was formed in 1996, and the first temple in the country was dedicated in 2019. Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has:
-
115,000 members (approximately)
-
27 stakes, 289 wards and branches, 5 missions
-
1 temple (Kinshasa) and 3 announced (Lubumbashi, Kananga, and Mbuji-Mayi)
Grateful for the Plan of Salvation
When John Lwamba from Lubumbashi was serving a mission, his older brother passed away. He says, “It was a bit difficult for me to accept because he was the first person in my family to pass away. With the help of my mission president and the scriptures, I was able to accept it, and since that day, this experience has brought me close to the Savior. I know that as He rose up, all my family members who have passed away are going to rise up again.”
