Where should I look for a new job? How can I connect better with my family? What is God’s plan for me?
Perhaps you have had questions such as these about your life, your relationships, or your faith. The Holy Ghost can guide you as you address questions like these. Passages in the Doctrine and Covenants and teachings from prophets can help you learn about receiving revelation for your pressing questions.
Revelation is available to all who ask.
-
“If you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:5; see also Matthew 7:7).
-
“The privilege of receiving revelation is one of the greatest gifts of God to His children.” —President Russell M. Nelson
Revelation is received in diverse ways.
-
“I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart” (Doctrine and Covenants 8:2).
-
“God uses a variety of patterns to convey His revelations to His sons and daughters, such as thoughts to the mind and feelings to the heart, dreams, visions, conversations with heavenly messengers, and inspiration.” —Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Revelation may require preparation.
-
“You must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right” (Doctrine and Covenants 9:8).
-
“Our spiritual preparation is greatly enhanced when we regularly study the scriptures and truths of the gospel and ponder in our minds the guidance we seek.” —Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Revelation can come in the form of peace.
-
“Cast your mind upon the night that you cried unto me in your heart. … Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter?” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:22–23).
-
“The Spirit will speak peace to your soul. He will urge you forward in faith. And He will bring back the memory of those times when you felt the light and the love of Jesus Christ.” —President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency
Revelation can bring joy.
-
“I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy” (Doctrine and Covenants 11:13).
-
“Joy that fills our souls brings with it an eternal perspective in contrast to day-to-day living. That joy comes as peace amidst hardship or heartache.” —Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
