The Book of Mormon Videos—a Game Changer for Our Family Scripture Study

One simple tool helped elevate our family scripture study.
Daily family scripture study has always been important to my husband and me. As parents of three boys, we know that they (and we!) need the strength and blessings that come through daily experiences with the word of God.
When the Book of Mormon Videos first came out, we used them to start our Come, Follow Me lessons when the videos corresponded with the verses we read. Our boys were captivated by the stories they saw unfold each week. As we discussed the principles taught in the lesson, I could see that they felt a connection with the scriptures in a way they hadn’t before. The reasons for those connections were different for each of our children, depending on their age and learning style. Our teenager, Christian, talked about how seeing the setting and events visually helped remove the difficulty of having to picture the events; instead, he was able to focus more on the teachings of the scriptures and better understand the big picture. For Cameron, the videos helped him remember what happened for much longer than when he simply read the verses. And for Grant, still in Primary, the videos helped him better understand the teachings because, he says: “When you read the Book of Mormon, it can be confusing. But when you see it, it’s easy to understand.”
As we’ve included the Book of Mormon Videos in our study, the scriptures and messages in them have become even more real. They’ve helped us visualize how ancient prophets and people faced challenges in their lives that are similar to what we face today.
President Russell M. Nelson once taught: “Something powerful happens when a child of God seeks to know more about Him and His Beloved Son. Nowhere are those truths taught more clearly and powerfully than in the Book of Mormon.”1 Studying the Book of Mormon together as a family, with the powerful assistance of the Book of Mormon Videos, has truly helped our family draw closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
