Prompting at the Pool
Two summers ago, I worked as a lifeguard at a local pool. One day, I noticed a woman resting on the side of the pool who wasn’t moving. I had the thought to check on her, but I ignored it. I assumed that I was worrying too much.
I had another prompting to check on her, but I still doubted myself. I was afraid to make a big deal about something that was probably nothing. But she still wasn’t moving, so I pointed the lady out to my supervisor.
My supervisor tapped on the lady’s shoulder. She moved a little and then passed out in my supervisor’s arms. We got her out of the water and called for emergency medical services. We found out that she was diabetic and had passed out from low blood sugar. She ended up being OK, but I learned a few things from this experience:
First, we need to stop doubting ourselves and start trusting in our abilities.
Second, we need to listen to the “still, small voice.” I doubted myself, but the Holy Ghost can help us remember that we are capable of more than we think.
Third, Heavenly Father and others believe in you, even if you don’t. I thought I had messed up, but my supervisor told me I handled things well.
And fourth, always learn from your mistakes. We did well, but we could still have done better. This was an opportunity to learn and improve.
