2. Learn more about studying the scriptures

The scriptures have spiritual power. They testify of Jesus Christ, give us hope, and show the way to our Heavenly Father. The scriptures are sacred books that contain God’s word, communicated through His prophets. They show how God has blessed, warned, and guided His children throughout history.

Here are some questions and learning activities you could try:

  • Why has Heavenly Father given us the scriptures?

Read 1 Nephi 6:4–6, where Nephi explains the purpose of his writings. The scriptures can become trusted friends. They are always available when needed. Learning, pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling your life with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world. Scriptures can give peace, hope, and restoration of confidence. Share a favorite verse that has helped you come closer to Jesus Christ.

  • How can you hold tight to the word of God?

Lehi and Nephi saw a vision in which a rod of iron represented the word of God. Review 1 Nephi 8:19–25, 30–34; 11:25, and notice how different people used (or didn’t use) the rod of iron. What do you learn about the scriptures from this symbol? Talk about what it means to you to “continually [hold] fast” to the word of God in your life.

  • How can you find more light?

In these passages, look for words and phrases that describe how we should read scriptures—and how we are blessed when we do: Joshua 1:8; Psalm 119:105; 2 Timothy 3:15–17; 1 Nephi 15:24; 2 Nephi 32:3; Helaman 3:29–30. Make a list of what you find.
